XTempo Mover F.A.Q.

Q: Does XTempo Software use copy protection with hardware locking? In other words, does the copy protection bind the software to one computer? How about online activation?

A: No. We treat our customers the way we would want to be treated as customers.

In cases of overt piracy, we have the means to invalidate registration keys.

Q: Who is XTempo Software's secure ecommerce provider?

A: eSellerate.

Q: What is your upgrade policy?

A: For registered users, XTempo Mover upgrades are now free for the life of the product.

Q: I like XTempo Mover, but I'm looking for a comprehensive enterprise secure solution.

A: Check out the MOVEit software family by Standard Networks. XTempo Software is not affiliated with Standard Networks.

Q: What will be the effect of "Set destination files to Read-Only"? Will I get prompted to overwrite duplicates? Will it simply not copy dups?

A: XTempo Mover uses the standard Windows API for this function, so you will receive a message from Windows itself. The files being copied will be set to Read-Only after being copied. Though it may vary among different Windows versions and patches, if you later try to overwrite or delete these Read-Only files, usually you will be prompted that you are about to overwrite or delete a read-only file, and would you really like to do this or skip the file and proceed to the next.

Q: Will "Append counter" append a number to the existing file in the target folder, or to the new copy being dropped in? Will this affect the Modified Date?

A: "Append counter" will append a number to the new copy being dropped in. The existing duplicate will not be affected. The Modified Date also will not be affected, i.e. the new copy being dropped in will retain its Modified Date intact.

Q: Will "Rename by date and time" only affect duplicates, or will this affect all files copied?

A: This will affect all files copied or moved.

Q: What if there are multiple duplicates? Won't XTempo Mover then crash because it's trying to create two files with the same name (at the same time)?

A: As XTempo Mover's file operations work sequentially and are single-threaded, this scenario is extremely unlikely, if not impossible.

Q: What is the "Tools" tab about?

A: The "Tools" tab configures the "Tools" menu button in the main window. Basically, it sets up a shortcut menu.

For example, if you use XTempo Mover for moving photo files from a digicam or flash card to a PC, one thing you may wish to do after copying these files is view them with a photo browser. Rather than having to hunt through the shortcuts in the Windows Start menu, just run the photo browser directly from XTempo Mover.

The easiest way to configure this is to right-click the existing shortcut, go to properties, and copy the respective fields into those at the "Tools" tab. Do not copy the quotation marks, if any.

Q: Does XTempo Mover copy only new or changed files, or, with each copy, are all files recopied and overwritten? In other words, reduce traffic by only copying what is new or changed? Do you flag files with archive attribute set, and then turn off archive attribute?

A: At this time, XTempo Mover does not deal with archive attributes. XTempo Mover was not conceived primarily as a backup program but more as a file mover for digicams, flash drives, and such.
